Mandisa Controversy

So, I heard from my husband that Mandisa was talking out about being anti-gay, so I had to check it out. I Googled her name and here's what I came up with:

This article caught my eye and can be found in its entirety here. Here's the Mandisa portion of the article called The Gospel According To...Mandisa?

Mandisa.

Oh, Mandisa.

She comes rolling down the ramp shouting, “This song goes out to everybody that wants to be free! Your addiction, your lifestyle or situation may be big, but God is bigger!” Then she launches into a pitchy attack on Mary Mary’s “Wanna Praise You,” yelling (her preferred singing style) about Jesus (her preferred lyrical topic). Now, I ain’t mad at Jesus. In fact he’s just alright with me. And I don’t want to jump to conclusions about Mandisa’s attitudes concerning The Gays. But everyone knows that the word “lifestyle” is a code word used by gross, amoral religious jerks who refuse to do what Jesus told them to do (that whole “love everybody” stuff) And their secret definition of the word “lifestyle” is “burn in hell, faggots.” Except it’s not a secret. Maybe someone should tell Mandisa about this.

Oh, wait, maybe she already knows. I just read on this very Web site about how Mandisa’s favorite writer is a bona fide crazy person named Beth Moore who thinks that young lesbians are recruited by predatory old lesbian vampires and Satan and that they all hate men. Nice. Simon calls Mandisa’s performance “self-indulgent,” but it’s Paula who really gets under Mandisa’s skin by saying that millions of people just joined the “Church of Mandisa.” Mandisa begins to vigorously shake her head “no” and you know she wants to start testifying about how she is nothing and God is everything. Except there’s that little nagging detail about how Mandisa joined a talent competition intended to do nothing more than make a STAR out of the winner. A celebrity. A person put on a pedestal by the rest of the population, adored for all time, footprints in cement, stalked by the mentally ill, and showered with cash. That’s what humble and meek servants of God do these days.

And in this article, we hear more about her antigay beliefs found here.

Backstage Buzz: Mandisa's Anti-Gay Affiliation May Have Done Her In
'Idol' finalist got the boot Wednesday night
By TMZ.COM STAFF
(April 6, 5:20PM ET) -- America's shocking decision to vote Mandisa off 'American Idol' Wednesday night was not a shock at all to those backstage. Sources connected with 'Idol' tell TMZ the buzz behind the scenes last night was Mandisa getting the boot had nothing to do with her performance -- it was all about her openly anti-gay affiliations.

According to TMZ sources, lots of Hollywood types were backstage, including agents, PR flacks, managers and special guests. And the sentiment was clear; as one person put it, "Once you don't have the gays - forget about it."

During 'Idol's' March 28 show, which had a "Songs of the 21st Century" theme, Mandisa's choice "Wanna Praise You" raised eyebrows.

Before she began singing, Mandisa said, "This song goes out to everyone who wants to be free. Your addiction, lifestyle, or situation may be big, but God is bigger!" Mandisa said the song means a lot to her "because it's a testimony that there's nothing too hard for God."

Mandisa is openly a big fan of anti-gay author and lecturer Beth Moore. In her bio on the 'American Idol' website, Mandisa called Moore her "personal American Idol." Moore's website provides links to other sites that locate ministries for "those affected by homosexuality."

Another article from TMZ.com found in its entirety here starts out like this....
Is Mandisa the new Laura Schlessinger?

Even though she tried to redeem herself in this article, I think it was too little too late. People look to the negative more than they do the positive which is why (as you can see above) I found more negative articles regarding Mandisa than positive. What a shame. I honestly thought despite of her being a heavy woman, she was beautiful and a wonderfully talented singer and that she would have been in the top 3 for sure. I'm sad to say I was wrong.

Maybe the anti-gay thing had a factor in her being voted off or maybe America just started voting based on performance, but I'm in favor of the former... because her website http://www.mandisaministries.com/ is now shut down. Hmm.

What do you think?

wow. mandisa clearly states in the Advocate article that when she was talking about 'lifestyles'- the very start of this whole controversy- she was speaking about HERSELF and her own eating problems. not homosexuals. it sickens me that so many people made such quick judgements ... and continue to do so. it sickens me that those judgments, purely uniformed and biased, have such an influence. why don't we at least TRY to listen and understand before we make such brash decisions to dismiss someone in a little box that fits an ignorant stereotype?
you talk in the blog above about beth moore- i encourage you to do a little more research about her. i think you might find that you're misjudging her. look at her as a PERSON, not just words that you disagree with on a page.

Get a clue, Robin. If you look at the post above, you'll see that I quoted articles, didn't state any of that myself... so don't go off half-cocked calling me ignorant. You're a day late and a dollar short, this topic has long been forgotten... it took you nearly two months to find this post and come up with your response? Besides, you're using a template post to state your opinion, tacky, very tacky.

And by the way, had you looked for anything more than this post, you'd know that as of 05/10/06 AMERICAN IDOL IS BANNED FROM THIS BLOG.

For goodness' sake, firstly, if you don't want people to comment on old posts DELETE THEM, and secondly, it's called gay-bashing if people even give the slightest out-of-context hint that they're anti-gay, but it's called funny or clever when people openly critisise and judge Christians.

If you ever run out of money or are evicted from your home, why don't you go to one of the many gay or atheist charities that exist to help the less fortunate?

...Oh but WAIT...!?
