Saturday is a monumental day.
I’m cutting off my hair.
“Eh, what’s the big deal?” you may ask. I’m not just cutting my hair. I’m cutting a LOT of it off.
Why? To give away to charity. My sister, my husband’s little sister, and I are chopping our hair off to give to two different places. My older sister and I are donating our hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign which makes wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer, and hubby’s 7-year-old sister will donate hers to the Locks Of Love campaign, which uses the donated hair to make wigs for disadvantaged children who’ve lost their hair from cancer and who can’t afford the high price of a wig. (See links to webpages for a much more elegant description of the good these groups do.)
I always have long hair, so this is a bit traumatic for me, lol. I’ll post some before and after pics from the day sometime Saturday night or Sunday.
Anyone have any stories of doing this, or knowing anyone who did? Or perhaps know of a woman or child who received one of these wigs?

Kate that's wonderful!!
I've donated to Locks of Love twice now. The last time it was over 13 inches. More than a FOOT of hair. lol
I think both programs are amazing. I don't know anyone personally who needed a wig, but knowing I could help a child made cutting my hair much less traumatic.
Can't wait for the pics. :)
Such a wonderful thing you're doing, Kate. I applaud you.
Yay!
Kudos to you Kate! And you'll look great in a short and sassy do.
I have a brother who had thick curly hair almost to his waist that he wore in a long braid (we've got American Indian blood). My Mom always wanted him to cut his hair and when she died of leukemia he cut it and donated to Locks of Love. He said donating it was the only way he could cut it.
Cutting your hair off is hard to do. But if you go to a shop that has packaged and sent the hair before then they usually have stories and sometimes pictures of people who've gotten wigs.
What a fantastic thing to do. It'll mean so much to the person/people who can now get a wig.
You guys are awesome. My hair has never been that long, but what a great thing to do.
I have a few friends who both have done it twice - their hair grows so fast! They are the best.
Thanks all! I'm still nervous, lol, but it really does help knowing it's going to a good cause.
Holly - WOW! 13 inches! That's amazing!
Rosie - I was actually surprised at the number of men who have done this. There are pictures up on the sites (mostly on the Pantene one), and there are so many men who'll donate. What a great thing for your brother to do. :-)
Anne, Jen, Erin and Stacy - Thanks! I'll definitely post pics!
As a woman who was bald two years ago because of chemo I want to say thank you. You guys ROCK!!!
Awesome, Katie! I didn't realize you were ready yet.
Jenster - Wow. And here I didn't think I knew anyone this would actually touch, though it didn't matter to me. (((Hugs))) for all you've been through. Hope you come back for the pics. :-)
Lori - Um, ready? SOO not ready, lol. However, the two sisters both want to do it before school starts (mine in last year of grad school, hubby's going into second grade!). So I'm going along with it. I'm actually getting pretty excited!
